As a Cuban-American with Spanish descent, I cannot even begin to point out all the errors and poor journalistic efforts made here to corroborate any fact from this story. Let me start off that I am an evangelical Christian that teaches the bible and especially bible prophecy.
First of all, there are two distinct visitations of the Virgin Mary on the island of Cuba. One is Nuestra Senora de la Caridad del Cobre, that is, Our Lady of Charity of the Cove. She appeared to three men off the coast of Cuba and the Catholic Church, as they do with EVERY nation on the face of this earth, encourage and endorse any visitation from Mary and as usual, a statue is created and a church is established. I don’t have to tell you the great apostasy there is in worshipping anything or anyone other than Jesus.
The other visitation of Mary is at a coastal town called Regla, named after our mother country Spain’s town of Regla. Again, there was a visitation of Mary, and naturally, since the town is called Regla in Cuba , and there already was a virgin apparition in the town of Regla in Spain, that very same Mary was adopted into Cuba’s city of Regla.
Now, what is it about the appearance of this virgin that makes her difference that all the other apparitions of Mary?
There is a strong religious folk tradition connecting the Black Virgins to the medieval Knights Templar and also with Mary Magdelene. A famous Black Virgin – la Madone des Fenestres (the Madonna of the Windows), near St-Martin-de-Vesubie (one site where many Templars were massacred) was believed by folk tradition in the area to have originally been brought to southern France by Mary Magdelene.
But in actuality, the answer is simple: The materials used to construct the face of Mary were ebony, dark woods or stones. Period. No conspiracy there here. It has nothing to do with coming from Africa.
Your assumption that Yemaya is from Nigeria is unfounded. Yemaya is one of the names of pagan goddesses from the west coast of Africa, namely the Congo. Mmmm–NO, Dylan! The RCC doctrine on this point is simply not Biblical. We are NOT perfectible in this life. If we had to be perfect in order to go to heaven, not one of us would get there. The “loss” that is being spoken of in the 1 Cor. passage is a loss of reward. This passage deals with “building” but the Apostle Paul, at other points compares the Christian life to an athletic competition (or even spiritual soldiering). In the athletic comparisons, Paul tells us that we must all pass before the Bema seat of Christ. The Bema (also known as the “judgment seat of Christ) was where a King would sit when he came to judge a sporting event. From there, he would pass out rewards to the victors. The other competitors would “suffer loss” if they were not victorious but Paul is NOT telling us that we would be sent to prison (purgatory) or executed (condemned) if we did not win the competition. Nowhere does the Bible teach that we must rely on a priest to give us absolution for every last little sin, in order to get us to heaven. Saying that one must have that as a “checkpoint” is to discount some measure of God’s grace and to give us a lot of anxiety when the Bible calls us to assurance and peace.
The 1 Cor. passage is set in the context (remember–ALL Biblical interpretation must take context into consideration) is comparing the role of a teacher in “building” other believers. The “five crowns” (mentioned at various points in the New Testament) that believers will receive in heaven, as reward, are based on faithfully carrying out the role of loving teacher of the Body of Christ. Being a teacher of the flock is a heavy responsibility and it is not always successful (and so some of the work would be “burned”). Paul was undoubtedly well aware that some of those he was teaching would not truly become a part of the Body. A builder, in that case, would have his work burned up, even though he himself would be saved. It is NOT saying that this would be part of the “refining fire” that we all go through in our Christian journey. The Bible compares itself to a precision sword. We must be equally precise in our interpretations. One of the main problems I have with RCC doctrine is the haphazard application of God’s word that seeks to justify some notion that a priest or whoever might have. When we impose meaning on a passage, that is called EISEGESIS and it is something we should not do. We must let ALL of Scripture speak to us at the same time and it will then interpret itself. This is called EXEGESIS and that is what we must always strive for when we approach Scripture. Hope this helps.
