30 per cent hike on bread prices trigger riots in Maputo

Tourists in Mozambique are stranded because of riots over steep hike in food prices in the capital Maputo.

Desperate and hungry people in Maputo use violence during their hunt for food.

Six people, including two children, were reportedly killed in clashes between the police and rioters across Maputo. Police said the violence, which was sparked after bread prices rocketed by 30 per cent, were the worst in the country since 2008.

Though there have been no reports of South Africans being injured, the government has closed its embassy offices in the country.

Department of International Relations spokesman Saul Molobi said last night that the situation in Mozambique was being closely monitored:

“All South Africans are safe and we have not received any reports of injuries of fatalities.”

SA Airways spokesman Fani Zulu said last night that more than 400 SAA passengers (about 200 waiting for flights in South Africa and 200 waiting in Mozambique) had been stranded because all four flights to and from Mozambique had been cancelled. He said this was due to safety concerns and because airports were not functioning.

“There was no air traffic control . it was completely unsafe for us to operate,” said Zulu.

Imam Rauf has the Obama Administration as one of his customers.

Yousef claim that the American foreign policy has bought the lie of Muslim groups who are making Islam look good in the eyes of Westerners.

“Muslim leaders such as Feisal Abdul Rauf have developed the courage to come forward with a very aggressive symbol of Islamic authority. This is the proposed Islamic center and mosque near the site of the 2001 World Trade Center attacks”, explain Yousef.

A former Hamas terrorist saved by Jesus warns about Islam.

“If it was any other American president, we wouldn’t have this aggressive step,” Yousef contended.

He noted the State Department has designated Rauf an ambassador to the Muslim world despite the imam’s unwillingness to condemn Hamas as a terrorist group.

“Of course, he cannot condemn Hamas, because he knows that Hamas is an organization that is doing the will of Allah,” Yousef said.

“How can he condemn an organization that serves the same god that he worships every day five times?”

Yousef pointed out Rauf  has claimed Obama based his highly publicized Cairo speech to the Muslim world last year on a chapter from the Arabic version of Rauf’s book, “A Call to Prayer From the World Trade Center: Islamic Dawah in the Heart of America Post-9/11.”

Obama asserted in the speech that violent extremists have exploited tensions between Muslims and the West, insisting Islam was not part of the problem but part of promoting peace.

Defenders of the proposed Ground Zero mosque cite American Muslims’ First Amendment freedoms to practice their religion.

But Yousef makes a distinction between Islam and other religions, arguing Islam is a subversive system that threatens America’s very existence.
