Hugo Chavez: «Israel plans to terminate the Palestinian people»

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Friday charged that Israel aims to «terminate the Palestinian people»

Hugu Chavez also expressed support for the establishment of Jerusalem as capital of an independent Palestinian state.

“We .. are on the side of the Palestinian people’s memorable struggle … against the genocidal state of Israel that knocks down, kills and aims to terminate the Palestinian people», Chavez told visiting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

«We reiterate … our greatest commitment and our greatest solidarity … for the creation of an independent Palestinian state with the holy city of Jerusalem as its capital», he added during Abbas’s first state visit to the country.

Chavez gave no details to support his charge that the Israel sought to eliminate the Palestinian population.

Socialist Chavez is a harsh critic of both Israel and the United States. In January, Venezuela cut diplomatic relations with Israel over the Israeli offensive in Gaza of nearly a year ago, which Chavez called a Palestinian «holocaust».

Abbas met on Friday night with Chavez, who has stepped squarely into Middle East politics this week by hosting both the Palestinian leader and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

During their meeting the Palestinian leader dismissed an Israeli plan to temporarily halt new construction of West Bank settlements as insufficient on Friday, saying Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu chose occupation rather than peace.

Pilgrims in Mecca: «Death to America, Death to Israel»

Thousands of Iranians chanted “Death to America, death to Israel” inside a huge tent on Thursday during the hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

Vatican snubbed Irish police inquiry into Catholic priests sex abuse of children

The inquiry into sex abuse by Catholic priests in Ireland has disclosed that the Vatican ignored formal requests for information.

The Cardinals are old wicked men. The list of sexual crimes within this priesthood is a never ending story.

The inquiry asked for details of reports on abuse sent to the Vatican by the Dublin archdiocese in 2006. The Vatican did not reply but told the Irish Foreign Affairs department the request «had not gone through appropriate diplomatic channels». The inquiry condemned church leaders for covering-up abuse for decades.

The Report of the Commission of Investigation into the Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin, which was published on Thursday, covered a period from 1975 to 2004. The commission said it was independent of the government and therefore did not regard it as appropriate to use diplomatic channels when seeking information.

A request for information from the Papal Nuncio also was ignored. In February 2007, the commission wrote to the Dublin-based Papal Nuncio asking him to forward all relevant documents in his possession. It also requested that he confirm whether he had any such documents but the Papal Nuncio did not reply.

Earlier this year, the commission again failed to receive a reply after sending the Papal Nuncio extracts from its draft report which referred to him and his office, as it was required to do.

A senior Vatican spokesman said diplomatic practice required that outside requests made to the governance of the Vatican pass through diplomatic channels, in this case the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin and the Irish Embassy to the Holy See in Rome.

The leader of the Catholic Church in Ireland has said he is deeply sorry and ashamed by the child abuse the report had revealed. Cardinal Sean Brady also apologized for the way the Church covered-up the crimes.

The report also found that on occasions senior police officers colluded in the cover-up. The commissioner of the Irish police, Fachtna Murphy, apologised for the police failure to protect victims.

Victims groups are now calling for a similar inquiry to take place in every diocese in Ireland. However, the Auxiliary Bishop of Dublin Eamonn Walsh has said he does not believe that should happen. He said it would be better for the Church to use its «time, energy and money» to improve child protection measures.

Likud MK: Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu is betraying his own voters

Yesterday the PA government in Ramallah called for a stop to all illegal construction in occupied «Arab Jerusalem».

The spokesperson also said that all Jewish construction in Judea and Samaria is illegal. CNN called new Jewish houses coming up in South Jerusalem for «buildings in this part of the West Bank».

Distrust and prejudice against Jews in Denmark doesn’t thrive only in extremist groups. Up to 75 per cent of immigrants from five different countries and 20 per cent  of ethnic Danes have anti-Jewish attitudes.

The data comes from a new study which appears in the book «Danmark og de fremmede: Om mødet med den arabisk-muslimske verden» (Denmark and the stranger: on the meeting with the Arab-Muslim world), which will be published Friday.

The study shows, additionally, that anti-Jewish attitudes are strikingly more widespread among the immigrants who define themselves as Muslims than among Christian immigrants.

The study is based on interviews with 1503 immigrants from five different groups: Turks, Pakistanis, Somalis, Palestinians and ex-Yugoslavians – as well as 300 ethnic Danes.

All were asked three questions, which deal with their attitudes towards various groups in society and not just to Jews.  But it’s the Jews that the five groups are clearly most distrustful and prejudiced against.

65.8 per cent of the five immigrant groups said that one «can’t be careful enough in relation to Jews in Denmark».  75.2 per cent don’t want a family member to marry a Danish Jew.  And 31.9 per cent  think that «there are too many Jews in Denmark».

«The study shows that the anti-Jewish attitudes are certainly not unique to extremist circles.  The attitudes are far, far more widespread among the immigrants, then we usually think», says professor Peter Nannestad of the Institute for Political Science at Aarhus University, who made the study.

But ethnic Danes can’t be said to be free of anti-Jewish attitudes.  For example, 18.2 per cent of them think that one ‘can’t be careful enough in relation to Jews in Denmark’, and 14.7 per cent don’t want to see a family member marry a Danish Jew.

Peter Nannestad says that the figures aren’t surprising, but are roughly in line with what is seen in other studies.  He refers to an American study of antisemitism in Europe from 2006, which gave the same picture of Danish attitudes towards Jews.

Chief Rabbi Bent Lexner of the Mosaic Faith-society isn’t surprised by the data.  He says that it’s probably Danish naivety which makes people think it isn’t so.

«Since the situation is so. It’s not a coincidence that the government is working on an action plan on how to create better awareness of the Jewish community in Denmark in such groups».

The study shows, additionally, that anti-Jewish attitudes are strikingly more widespread among the immigrants who define themselves as Muslims than among Christian immigrants.

The spokesperson for the Muslim Joint Council, Zubair Butt Hussain, didn’t want to comment on the study since he hasn’t read it yet.  But racism – regardless of whether it’s in the form of antisemitism, racism against Danish Muslims or other groups – is completely and totally unacceptable, he says.
